The Jaguar XK (X100) was and still is a great car for many reasons. But no matter how much we all love them we must admit there are a few corrosion issues with them. For many owners these were something of a rumour for a long time but as these cars age more and more owners are starting to see problems. What is really important for owners to know is that most issues can be fixed and these cars can still be used, enjoyed and loved for many years to come with the right care.
Rear Chassis Section
Among a number of corrosion prone areas the rear chassis section is a very common one. This is the part of the chassis that sits just behind the rear wheel. As with other corrosion points around the car this is the fault of the original factory design somewhat but thankfully our skilled team can actually get it repaired in such a way that it will last longer than the original work.
How The Rust Starts
This part of the chassis is actually made up of a number of layers of steel and this presents a problem. Where these layers where not properly sealed when they were first applied to the car they leave minute gaps into which water finds it way. Sitting behind the wheel as this area does it sees more than it’s fair share of water, grit, salt and mud and all at fairly high speeds so it is no wonder water gets in. The rust can begin under the surface on one of the sub layers but it eventually east through to the surface.
How We Fix Rear Chassis Section Corrosion
First of all we have to peel off all the layers of steel until we find one that shows no sign of rust. This may be right back to the last one! Once we do we can then re build the layers with fresh steel thus recreating the original profile. However, when we undertake this process we make sure the layers are properly sealed so you end up with a section less prone to rust than it was in the first place.
Keeping Your Classic Alive
As with all the work we do we aim to make sure the your XK gets back on the road and stays on the road. Our role is to help maintain these cars as they mature into classic cars and carry with them all of the passion and love they deserve.
