As you may have noticed we do an awful lot of repairs and restoration work on Jaguar XKs but there is a difference between the two and with that difference comes a wider issue; how far gone is too far gone when it comes to XK rust and damage?
Restoration VS Repair
There is no definitive line where repair work suddenly becomes a restoration. However you do get a feeling that there are so many things wrong with a car that stripping it right back to basics and building it back up just becomes a restoration job. What starts a a front cross member rust repair with some work on the rear wheel arch can easily spiral into something altogether more substantial.
Drawing a Line
What many Jag XK owners have to face is a line where the investment in the car may have to end. Every car owner has been there of course, but it’s a great deal more painful when it’s a car you love. This line differs for each person and it depends on budget and patience. We have a number of customers that bring their cars back every now and then for more corrosion work but each time they do the car gets a bit better because the work we do will last a very long time.
It is important when thinking about the fact that the X100 XK is a classic car. This means it will be worth money in the long run and it should be kept alive at all costs. So if you feel like there are a number of issues it is worth considering a full restoration. Perhaps you are looking on eBay for a damaged one that you can then invest money into to bring back to life. This is the key to the whole thing and to that end we often feel like any work we do counts as Jaguar XK Restoration because every little bit goes towards the greater good of keeping these amazing cars on the road.
If you would like to discuss specific issues like footwell rust or wheel repair then get in touch. But, do also drop us a line if you feel you want to go the whole hog and get your XK fully restored. We can strip it back completely and bit by bit re weld, repair, re spray and finish the entire car leaving you with a rejuvenated classic!
